Participation of Women in Leadership

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) of Lilongwe Archdiocese has called for more women in Nkhotakota to contest in the September elections. Speaking during a UNDP-funded awareness at a local community radio in the district under the "Enhancing the Participation of Women in the 2025 Malawi General Elections Project," CCJP’s District Coordinator, Precious Rabson, highlighted the need for greater women representation in leadership. Rabson called on stakeholders to support women, pointing out their trustworthiness and crucial role in decision-making. Meanwhile, Assistant District Elections Officer, Gideon Kanjilawaya, Assistant Registration Officer for NRB, Blessings Lungu and District Programmes Officer for NICE, Hellina Mwimba, have since encouraged people to register for the elections once new dates for the supplementary registration exercise are announced. The awareness, supported by MEC, NRB, and NICE, aims to address gender gaps in politics. Currently, women hold only 23 percent of parliamentary seats in Malawi, lagging behind neighboring countries like Zambia and South Africa. Reported by Innocent Chunga
